Cape Henlopen School District
The Cape Henlopen School District borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay. From the Indian River Inlet, to just south of Milford, the District covers some of the most beautiful and historic landmarks in Delaware. It is home to Lewes, “The First Town in the First State,” Rehoboth Beach, the “Nation’s Summer Capital”, and the beautiful, historic town of Milton.
The District is currently home to five elementary schools that are located in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Milton. All five elementary schools have been built or renovated within the last eight years. The most recent, Lewes Elementary School, is located on Savannah Road and opened to students and staff in April 2022. Two beautiful middle schools feed into Cape Henlopen High School that is centrally located in Lewes on Kings Highway. Construction on a third middle school is underway at the former Shields Elementary School site and will open in the fall of 2024. In 2017 Cape Henlopen High School was named the most beautiful high school in the state by Architectural Digest Magazine. A 400-student expansion at the high school opened at the start of the 2021-2022 school year after its approval during the 2018 capital project referendum. This expansion has helped to accommodate the rapid growth the District has seen over the last several years. To date, the District enrollment is over 6,300 students.
Cape Henlopen School District is also home to the Sussex Consortium, a nationally renowned program for children with autism. The Sussex Consortium serves students from all over Sussex County, and its reputation as one of the best schools for autism in the state and in the country, attracts parents and students to the District from near and far. In 2020, the District opened a brand new Sussex Consortium facility off of Sweetbriar Road, in Lewes, Delaware.
Cape has also been a consistent state leader in academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Since 2015, Cape has consistently been one of the top performing school districts in the state academically and constantly works to evaluate and implement new strategies and programs, such as the Spanish Immersion program at the elementary schools and the middle school world language program. Outside of the classroom, Cape athletic teams have dominated both the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and Henlopen Conference tournaments.
The Cape Henlopen School District prides itself in serving a diverse community that is not only highly involved with the schools but supports and helps the District promote the success of all students. Since 2014, the community has helped and supported the District by passing three capital project referendums to build three brand-new elementary schools (2014), to rebuild and renovate the existing two elementary schools (2016), and to build a third middle school and add an addition to Cape Henlopen High School (2018). The capital projects from the three referendums are scheduled to be completed in 2024. The District is grateful for the unwavering support of the community and recognizes that because of that support, the District is able to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students, staff, and community members.
